Experienced crews inside the fence

Refineries and petrochemical plants run on tight margins and tighter schedules. When a unit comes down for a turnaround or a capital project, every hour of downtime matters. LS Energy Services USA provides field services personnel with extensive experience working inside the fence, where process safety, permitting and coordination with operations are part of every task.

Turnaround planning, scheduling and execution

A successful turnaround is decided long before the unit is shut down. We help plan and schedule turnaround work packages, line up crews and materials, and execute the work so the unit can return to service on time. We also respond to unplanned shutdowns and emergency callouts.

Capital project planning, estimation and execution

For plant expansions, unit modifications and new equipment installs, we support planning and estimating as well as construction. Recent examples include reactor installations, loading rack and gangway upgrades and stainless steel process piping. See our projects for details.

Specialty welding services

Process plants use a wide range of materials, from carbon steel to stainless steel and alloys. Our specialty welding services support repairs, modifications and new piping in demanding service, carried out to the owner's specifications and applicable codes.

Plant field fabrication services

Field fabrication lets piping and steel be fitted to actual site conditions, which reduces rework during tie-ins. Our plant field fabrication crews support both turnarounds and capital projects.

Safety in process environments

Work inside operating plants calls for strict safety discipline. Every LS Energy Services USA employee has stop work authority, and our 2024 statistics show a 0.00 TRIR and a 0.67 EMR. Read more on our safety page.

Trusted by chemical and refining clients

We have worked for well-known chemical and refining companies in the Texas Gulf Coast area, including projects in Pasadena, Deer Park and Baytown. See a partial list of our clients.

The phases of a turnaround

A turnaround usually moves through four phases, and contractor support matters in each one:

  • Scope and planning - defining work lists, estimating labor and materials and building the schedule.

  • Pre-turnaround work - prefabricating piping and spools, staging materials and completing work that can be done while the unit is running.

  • Execution - shutdown, opening equipment, inspection, repair and replacement, carried out around the clock to an hour-by-hour schedule.

  • Start-up support - closing out work, supporting the return to service and capturing lessons learned for the next outage.

Our field personnel have experience across these phases and work alongside plant operations, maintenance and engineering teams.

Process safety and plant rules

Refineries and many chemical plants are covered by OSHA's Process Safety Management standard (29 CFR 1910.119), which places requirements on how contractors are selected, trained and managed. Work inside the fence also follows each plant's permitting, lockout and hot work procedures. Our crews are used to working under these systems and treat them as part of doing the job right.

Example process plant projects

  • Green field installation of four reactors, a vent stack, structural steel and associated piping, instrumentation and electrical work.

  • Replacement of loading rack gangways and loading arms, with modified piping, new work platforms, stairs and concrete.

  • Installation of a reactor with stainless steel pipe, I&E and structural steel in an indoor laboratory.

  • Modification of existing water treatment lagoon platforms and installation of new maintenance access platforms.

Planning for the next outage

The best time to plan a turnaround is right after the last one ends. Capturing what went well, what took longer than expected and what equipment needs attention next time helps plants build tighter scopes and schedules. We work with plant teams to carry those lessons forward into planning, scheduling and estimating for the next event.

Frequently asked questions

Do you support emergency shutdowns?

Yes. We provide time-sensitive response for turnarounds, shutdowns and emergency callouts.

Can you take a capital project from estimate to completion?

Yes. We support capital project planning, estimation and execution, including field fabrication and specialty welding.

What is the difference between a turnaround and a shutdown?

A turnaround is a planned outage to inspect, repair and upgrade a unit. A shutdown can be planned or unplanned; we support both, including emergency callouts.

Do you provide field fabrication inside the plant?

Yes. Our plant field fabrication crews fit piping and steel to actual site conditions to reduce rework during tie-ins.

What materials can your welders work with?

Our specialty welding services support repairs and new piping in demanding service, carried out to the owner's specifications and applicable codes. Contact us with your material and procedure requirements.
